“I’ve heard about you,” she said, hoping to prompt a conversation.
His lips twitched, a hint of amusement dancing in his eyes. “And what have you heard?” he asked, his voice a low rumble.
Sarah hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. “That you’re a mystery,” she finally replied.
He chuckled softly, a sound that seemed to reverberate in the air. “A mystery, huh? I guess I’ve heard worse.”
The baby stirred slightly, and his focus shifted back to the child, a protective instinct evident in his every movement.
“Is he yours?” Sarah found herself asking, the need to know outweighing her caution.
His expression softened, and he shook his head. “No, but he needs someone right now.”
There was a story there, Sarah realized—a deep, complicated story hidden beneath layers of silence.
“Why did you come here?” she pressed, sensing an opportunity to learn more.
He looked at her, and for a moment, she thought he wouldn’t answer.
But then, as if making a decision, he spoke. “To find peace. To give this little one a chance.”
