Thought It Was Just a Letter… Until It Took Me Down a Path I Could Never Turn Back From.

“I called them,” he said. “The moment Mateo asked us to go downstairs.”

My breath caught.

“You knew… even then?”

He nodded once.

“I didn’t want to be wrong.”

Another flash of lightning.

Another bang—desperate this time.

“But I wasn’t.”

We stood there in the rain as the sirens grew louder, red and blue lights beginning to flicker at the end of the street.

For forty years, I thought our home was where we were safest.

That night, I learned something else.

Safety isn’t where you live.

It’s who was prepared when everything falls apart.

And as the police surrounded the house behind us—our house, no longer ours—I realized the truth I would carry for the rest of my life:

Betrayal may come quietly…

But survival belongs to those who were listening all along.
