A tragic disaster unfolded in Indonesia after a powerful volcanic eruption on Mount Dukono claimed the lives of three hikers and left rescue teams battling dangerous conditions to recover the victims’ bodies.
The eruption happened early Friday morning on North Maluku island, where Mount Dukono suddenly exploded with terrifying force, sending a massive column of volcanic ash nearly 10 kilometers into the sky. Videos shared online showed thick black smoke, flying debris, and frightened hikers scrambling to escape as the volcano roared violently above them.
According to Indonesian authorities, the victims were part of a hiking group made up of 20 Singaporean and Indonesian climbers who had decided to ascend the mountain despite repeated safety warnings issued by officials in recent months. Two of the victims were Singaporean men aged 27 and 30, while the third victim was a woman from the nearby city of Ternate.
The eruption reportedly occurred around 7:41 in the morning while several hikers were still near the volcano’s summit and crater area.
