What Denaturalization Really Means
Naturalization is the legal process through which immigrants become United States citizens.
It requires applicants to be at least 18 years old, demonstrate basic English proficiency, and prove “good moral character.”
For generations, it has represented the final step of belonging — the moment someone becomes American in the eyes of the law.
But Trump has repeatedly signaled he wants that status to be reversible.
In December, he openly questioned whether naturalized citizens should retain their rights at all.

“We have criminals that came into our country,” he said. “They were naturalized maybe through Biden or somebody that didn’t know what they were doing.”
Then came the line that stunned immigration advocates:
“If I have the power to do it… I would denaturalize.”
