“Systemic and Chilling”
Civil rights organizations reacted swiftly.
The American Civil Liberties Union issued a blistering statement warning of the consequences.
“These efforts to strip citizenship from Americans are systemic and chilling,” the ACLU said.
The organization warned that citizens are now fearful that minor mistakes made years — even decades — ago could be weaponized.
“They have made U.S. citizens fearful that mistakes on past applications could be used to target them, take away their citizenship, and destroy their lives.”
The ACLU added that Trump’s approach is already discouraging lawful residents from pursuing citizenship at all.
What was once a celebratory milestone, they said, is now shadowed by fear.
