What the ‘Doomsday Plane’ Is Actually For
The E-4B Nightwatch is not a standard military aircraft.
It is a flying command center.
One of just four in the US fleet, the plane serves as a mobile headquarters for the president, the secretary of defense, and top military leadership in the event of catastrophe.
Nuclear war.
Decapitation strikes.
The complete destruction of ground-based command centers.
The aircraft is built to survive what most of the world cannot.
The US Air Force explains that in a national emergency, the E-4B provides a “highly survivable command, control, and communications center” capable of directing US forces and executing emergency war orders.
