Our family went out to dinner with a group, hoping to enjoy a relaxing evening together. The restaurant was nice, the food was good, and the service was perfectly fine. Nothing about the experience gave us any reason to complain. When the bill finally arrived, the total came to $585.
After everyone had finished eating, we settled the bill and left a $60 tip. To us, that felt fair. It was a little over 10% of the total, and nobody at the table thought we were being unreasonable. We weren’t trying to make a statement or send a message. We simply paid for our meal, added a tip, and expected the evening to end on a pleasant note.
Instead, one unexpected comment from the waiter turned an ordinary dinner into an uncomfortable situation that we are still talking about.
