Why You See Tree Trunks Painted White — and What It’s Really Protecting

Why Only the Bottom of the Trunk Is Painted

You’ll usually notice the paint stops partway up the tree.

That’s intentional.

The lower trunk is where sunscald is most severe.

It’s also the area most exposed to reflected sunlight from snow or pavement.

Applying paint higher up offers no added benefit.

So caretakers focus only where it matters.

The paint is usually applied:

  • Once per year
  • In late fall
  • Before harsh winter conditions begin

A small task.

A big payoff.
