FAQ #2 – Do Spray-On De-Icers Actually Work?
Yes — spray-on defrosting solutions do work, and they can save you a lot of scraping time.
According to Larry Morrison of NAPA Auto Parts, you’ve got two main options:
- De-icer you pour into the washer reservoir – this helps your washer fluid melt light frost and ice as you spray.
- Aerosol de-icing sprays – these are more concentrated and go directly on the glass.
These products typically leave a thin moisture-repellent film on the windshield that makes it harder for condensation and ice to stick to the glass in the first place.
You can also use simple DIY mixes as a spray in a pinch. Common combos that work:
- Rubbing alcohol + water
- Pickle juice (salt + water) in a spray bottle
- Vodka + water
Spray, wait a bit, then use your wipers or scraper to clear the loosened ice. Just remember: anything with salt or alcohol should be used on glass — not paint — and not every single day if you care about long-term finishes and rubber.
Bottom line: let your car’s AC and defroster do the heavy lifting, use de-icer for the stubborn stuff, and keep your hands off the inside of the glass. Your visibility — and your windshield — will be much better for it.
