Authorities Struggle to Assess the Scale of the Tragedy
Valais Canton police confirmed that “several tens of people” are believed to have died.
Approximately 100 others were injured, many of them seriously.
Police commander Frederic Gisler told reporters that identifying victims and notifying families will take time.
“It is still too early to give an exact death toll,” he said.
The bar remains unsafe to enter, preventing investigators from determining the cause of the blaze.
Valais Canton attorney general Beatrice Pilloud emphasized that there is no indication of an attack.
“At no moment is there a question of any kind of attack,” she said.
