‘Total Chaos’: Survivors Describe the Escape
Those who made it out alive described scenes of overwhelming panic.
Axel Clavier, a 16-year-old visiting from Paris, told the Associated Press that one of his friends died inside the bar.
“Two or three were missing,” he said.
He recalled suffocating smoke filling the room as flames spread rapidly.
At one point, Axel hid behind a table before running upstairs and attempting to break through an acrylic glass window using furniture.
When the window finally gave way, he escaped barefoot, without his jacket, phone, or bank card.
“I am still alive and it’s just stuff,” he said. “I’m still in shock.”
