Panic in a Confined Space
Witnesses described desperate attempts to flee from a basement nightclub area.
People surged toward a narrow staircase and doorway as smoke thickened.
Some fell. Others were pushed back by heat and flames.
The collapse of parts of the wooden ceiling only added to the chaos.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the conditions inside made rescue efforts extremely dangerous.
