You’re heading to the bathroom at night. The light flicks on. And there it is — a sleek, silvery bug darting across the floor with a strange, wiggly glide… like a tiny underwater creature lost on land.

Seeing a silverfish isn’t just bad luck — it’s a clue. They thrive in environments with high humidity, often above 75%, making bathrooms, basements, laundry rooms, and spaces under sinks ideal breeding grounds.

To combat this, use a dehumidifier or exhaust fan to keep humidity below 50%. They also prefer dark, undisturbed spaces like behind baseboards, in closets, attics, or storage boxes. Regular cleaning can disrupt their habitat.

Silverfish feed on hidden food sources, including book bindings, photo albums, wallpaper paste, damp clothing, or linens, and even cereal crumbs or sugar spills. Dust and dandruff also serve as snacks for them.

Let’s debunk a few myths: Silverfish don’t bite humans — they lack the mouthparts for it and are completely harmless. They don’t spread diseases like cockroaches or rodents do. Seeing one doesn’t necessarily mean an infestation, although multiple sightings could suggest hidden nests. And they can exist in clean homes, provided there’s high humidity.
