Recognized as the largest annual joint military exercise conducted by the United States on the African continent, African Lion has been held since 2004. It serves as a critical platform for strengthening cooperation between the U.S. and its African allies, improving interoperability, and enhancing readiness for responding to global security challenges.
While the exercise is designed to build strategic partnerships and operational efficiency, it has not been without risk. In 2012, a tragic helicopter crash near Agadir claimed the lives of two U.S. Marines and injured two others during the same exercise, highlighting the inherent dangers of complex military operations in difficult environments.
