Thomas Ryan, an economist at Capital Economics, described the report as “encouraging,” noting that strong hiring in retail and transportation suggests consumers have not yet dramatically cut back their spending habits.
“These sectors usually provide an important signal about the strength of the economy,” Ryan explained. “So the fact they are still expanding is a relatively positive sign despite the hit from rising gasoline prices.”
However, not all the signals in the report were positive.
